Conor McGregor vows to stop drinking by giving up stout and whiskey and focus on UFC return after horror leg break

CONOR McGREGOR has once again vowed to ditch the booze as he prepares for his return to the octagon.

The UFC’s poster boy is in the final stages of recovering from the horrific broken leg he suffered in his trilogy fight against Dustin Poirier last July.

McGregor, 33, has enjoyed many a tipple of his Proper No 12 Whiskey and his own-brand stout – Forged – during his hiatus from the cage, but has vowed to abstain from them both once he resumes martial arts training.

He told Severe MMA: “Once I get the leg cleared and I get that feeling when I kick a body, step back in and out, then I’ll be able to gauge time.

“Then I’m going to isolate myself, stay away from the pub, stay away from my Forged Irish stout, my delicious smooth Proper 12 Irish whiskey and dedicate myself to my craft 100 per cent.

“I’ll give it a month or two of that and see how everything goes and then make the move [for a comeback].

“I’m in no rush, I know there are a lot of people supporting me, I want to do them well and that’s what we’re going to do.”

Former two-division champion McGregor has made a faster-than-expected recovery from his nasty leg break.

The Irishman is eyeing an April return to sparring, which he hopes will pave the way for a headline spot at International Fight Week in July.

“I would like [to return at] International Fight Week. But we’ll see, though. I’ve got to take it day by day.

“April they said I’d be back sparring, back twisting and turning. I was told I could box a couple of months back and then all of sudden, I couldn’t box.

“So I’m just taking it day by day, there’s no rush.

“I’m in a great place mentally.

“Physically, I feel strong, I feel energetic. I’m always eager to get in a fight, so [I’ll] just take it day by day and it’ll happen.

“It will happen when the Lord wants it to happen.”

McGregor will look to return to the win column in his comeback fight following back-to-back losses to former interim lightweight champion Dustin Poirier.
