Arsenal were really interested in £175k-a-week Chelsea player this season before his injury

Arsenal were looking at Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella as a potential transfer target earlier in the season.

That is according to journalist Bobby Vincent.

Marc Cucurella, 25, has come under-fire for his fair share of criticism since his £60m transfer (Sky Sports) from Brighton to Chelsea in the summer of 2022.

Despite a poor first season with the Blues, the left-back was beginning to find his form again this campaign under the management of Mauricio Pochettino.

Unfortunately, the Spanish defender suffered an ankle injury last month that stopped him in his tracks.

Journalist Fabrizio Romano previously reported via X that Cucurella won’t be available again until at least February. We’re patiently waiting for more details from the club.

Speaking on the Si Phillips Talks Chelsea podcast this week, Vincent has reported that Premier League side Arsenal were quite keen on Cucurella earlier in the season.

Vincent explained: “I heard that Arsenal were really interested in him before he got injured.

“So that could’ve been something that happened in January, Arsenal moving for him, whether or not that interest continues to the summer, I’m not really sure when he’s due back, not for a while yet by the looks of it. I do think Cucurella will be sold.”

Arsenal were interested in Marc Cucurella

Cucurella’s a likeable character that we want to do well at Chelsea, but the truth is he’s massively underperformed so far since arriving from Brighton.

If Arsenal do reignite interest in the £175k-a-week full-back (Spotrac), we may be wise to cash in.

Ben Chilwell, when fit, is the outstanding left-back at Stamford Bridge. We’d prefer a much more reliable and steady competitor for Chilwell than Cucurella, whose defensive work can be extremely rash.

It’s frustrating to hear that an injury may have stood in the way of a transfer exit in this January window.

Our ideal scenario would be to find the left-back equivalent of Malo Gusto, who’s arrived at Chelsea and immediately slotted in as the perfect understudy to Reece James at right-back.
