Plus, see the singer’s abs-baring all-black ensemble
It wouldn’t be an award show without an appearance from Ariana Grande’s signature ponytail!
The 23-year-old singer hit the MTV VMAs white carpet with her go-to hairstyle — a slicked-back updo, plus her brand-new bangs — but this time, with a slight twist.
Instead of her usual pulled-back style, Grande added an ode to the ’80s with a subtle crimp “for a fun way to add texture and depth,” along with three-tone, blonde ombré dip-dye color, according to the star’s hairstylist Aaron Light. Before crimping, the hair pro lightly dusted his fingertips with Matrix Style Link Mineral Booster Texture Booster and raked them through her hair to create extra volume.
The hair pro says that the he and Grande weren’t totally set on her signature sky-high style until right before the show.
“We knew we would be going in the direction of the ponytail, but it wasn’t until the final dress rehearsal that I knew how we were going to do it,” Light tells PeopleStyle. “It was a collaborative vision.”
Grande paired the throwback style with an off-the-shoulder, all-black ensemble — an Alexander Wang gathered lace bandeau and high-waisted tuxedo pants — complete with a chic, of-the-moment accessory: a tiny black choker.
“Dangerous Woman”? We think so.
