13 million USD Blackpink concert and the dream of getting rich from Vietnamese music

Blackpink’s two concert nights at My Dinh Stadium in July 2023 attracted more than 60,000 spectators and revenue of more than 13 million USD, becoming an outstanding music event in Vietnam last year.

These numbers once again raise a big question for the performance industry in Vietnam: ” When will we have such achievements”?

The difference is called Blackpink

2023 marks the return of musical activities globally, after the whole world was affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. Tours by major artists have gone through many countries and regions, and a series of new products have been released, rich in both musical genres and forms of expression.

In Vietnam, last year, music lovers had the opportunity to participate in a series of major events. Besides annual music festivals such as: Monsoon Festival, Hozo Festival; OR Festival, individual concerts of Ha Anh Tuan, Trung Quan, Den Vau… were also organized professionally and methodically, attracting a large audience to attend.

However, the biggest mark on the performance market in Vietnam last year definitely belonged to Blackpink. With two shows in Hanoi, the Korean girl group brought in 13 million USD in revenue.

Blackpink’s concert attracted more than 60,000 spectators and made Vietnamese experts and music experts admire.

Sharing with Dan Tri reporter, musician and music producer Huy Tuan commented: ” Blackpink’s show is currently number one in the world market, there is nothing more to prove. There is no reason.” but did not achieve success in Vietnam. I added compliments just to “stroke the tail”.

Musician Huy Tuan also said that he himself enjoyed and was happy to watch a perfect entertainment program. “I watch with the mindset of experiencing a high-class, top-notch show from sound, lighting to performances ,” he said.

Music producer Vu Anh Tuan assessed that, with the Born Pink World Tour in Vietnam, international standards for performances and tours are still being implemented very carefully, with the right scale for concerts in other countries around the world. from stage, equipment, audience area, security, outside organization…

The money earned from ticket sales is just one of the things that Blackpink concerts can do. This event also marks the first time Hanoi has welcomed international artists to hold concerts at the venue with the largest audience capacity in the capital, creating a lot of value in promoting culture as well as developing tourism. calendar.

The keyword Blackpink dominated social networks for many days, flights, hotels, and motels were full of customers, many of whom came from China and Thailand.

Many Asian fans started to learn about traditional pho after the band members enthusiastically introduced it during the concert.

Open opportunities for the performance industry in Vietnam

Blackpink’s success in two shows in Hanoi last July partly shows that the opportunities of the performance industry in Vietnam are wide open. After many years of exploration, we have a solid infrastructure for classy music nights.

That is a system of facilities, from sound and lighting to a modern stage, enough to meet the needs of professional performances. Abundant accommodation and transportation services, professional and careful safety protection work. Support facilities are increasingly complete and convenient.

It is also impossible not to mention the changes from the audience – who played a decisive role in the success of the two shows.

Doctor of culture Dang Thieu Ngan – Vice President of the Korean Scientific Research Association, Director of External Affairs and Marketing of Naver Vietnam (Shareholder of YG Entertainment – Blackpink music group management company) – shared with Dan reporter. Tri: “For nearly 3 decades, Korean entertainment companies have always evaluated Vietnam as a potential market, but they were timid in opening concerts here.

The biggest reason is not because of infrastructure, security issues, or supply system, but more importantly, the ability of the audience to accept the ticket prices they offer to balance costs for the organizers is impossible.

In the past few years, there have been positive changes taking place among young people, starting from generation Z. The enthusiasm of young people to watch live music shows at home and abroad is the reason why. due to causing manufacturers to change their concepts. The success of Blackpink’s concert further confirms this.”

Above all, the most important and indispensable factor contributing to the success of the Blackpink concert lies in the superstructure – or in other words, the quick cooperation and neat procedures from the management units. cultural theory.

In less than 2 months, problems that arose before the event were neatly and decisively resolved by Ministries, Departments and Branches.

Talking about the government’s support, Mr. Bonor Seen – Born Pink project director in Hanoi, representative of iME Entertainment Group – expressed his appreciation: “With the active direction, guidance and companionship of the leaders Hanoi People’s Committee, Departments, branches, branches and relevant agencies, our event organization process took place in the safest and most effective way, absolutely ensuring security and order, brings a bold mark in the hearts of fans. I really appreciate this.”

Is the dream of 31 million USD by 2030 too far away?

At the discussion session on socio-economic contents on October 31, 2023, within the framework of the 6th session of the 15th National Assembly, National Assembly delegate Do Chi Nghia (Phu Yen delegation) commented on 2 Blackpink ‘s 13 million USD concert .

Mr. Nghia stated his opinion: “We strive for total performing arts revenue to be 16 million USD by 2020 and 31 million USD by 2030. Blackpink’s 2 concert nights are less than half of the number we strive for by 2020. 2030. This is worth thinking about.”

SPONSOR

Previously, many artists expressed surprise when learning about the huge amount of money Blackpink earned after each show and the profits they brought to Hanoi tourism with just 2 shows.

Talking with Dan Tri reporter, People’s Artist Quoc Hung – Deputy Director of the Vietnam National Academy of Music – expressed his admiration for the performance industry of Korean music groups: “When will Vietnamese singers Can we have shows like that?”.

People’s Artist Quoc Hung said that young singers in Vietnam have many talents. “I think that they are no less than Kpop singers in terms of talent, beauty, and even dancing ability.

But to develop as an industry, many supporting factors are needed, including the involvement of the state and agencies, creating opportunities and investments. Kpop has a vibrant market, a management company, a company that plans operations, invests in images, builds plans for music groups to develop… We don’t have that.”

Mr. Bonor Seen – Project Director of Born Pink – did not hesitate to express his hope that the Blackpink concert will open up opportunities for domestic and foreign businesses to organize more world-class shows in Vietnam.

“We desire to bring Vietnamese people opportunities to experience quality shows, as well as make Vietnam an attractive destination on the event map for art lovers.

I believe that concerts are a good event for promoting the economy, tourism activities at the destination, promoting national culture or enhancing the brand image of the city in particular and the country in general. on the map of the entertainment industry ,” he said.

The appearance of world-class concerts and art shows is of course not only Mr. Bonor Seen’s expectation.

In fact, in recent years, the cultural industry, including the performing arts industry in Vietnam, is trying to expand, however, to reach the figure of 31 million USD by 2030, we must We need to do more than that.

Mr. Ngo Quang Dong – Public policy expert of the Institute for Policy Research and Media Development (IPS) – affirmed to Dan Tri reporters that the “sweet fruit” of the entertainment industry of “Kimchi” does not come from within. one morning, one afternoon. Phenomena like Blackpink and BTS are all based on Korea’s strong cultural foundation.

” Their vision has been determined that for the past 30 years, the cultural and entertainment industry is the key industry that brings Korea to the world. That is the vision of the whole country on the basis of the State, Government and businesses. The private sector works together, not alone. That is the whole development strategy for the cultural and entertainment industry ,” Mr. Dong explained.

Blackpink showed off photos taken with Vietnamese audiences on the group’s homepage and thanked the extremely “fiery” spirit of Vietnamese audiences for helping them have explosive concerts (Photo: Blackpink Facebook).

Cultural doctor Dang Thieu Ngan also acknowledged that Vietnam has a lot of materials and human potential to exploit.

” However, to lay an “industrial” foundation, there needs to be a synchronous and professional connection into a system between the components of artistic creation, publishing, distribution and promotion of products. products, as well as the State’s support policies for these units or specific and clear laws so that professionals have a clearer and more specific view when operating.

In addition, if we want to be successful in building Vietnam’s cultural industry, we also need solidarity and fierce support from the domestic audience ,” Ms. Ngan said.

A famous musician and music producer in Vietnam (who wishes to remain anonymous) also said: “Kpop has been a famous music market for a long time but has only recently successfully penetrated the US. That shows that , success can hardly come from an individual but requires collective efforts, large corporations, and the support of the Government and the State.

For example, how does the Korean Ministry of Culture fund artists? They have an orientation about how big corporations support artists. They use culture to stimulate demand for the economy and other industries and products.”

Blackpink’s current achievements are also the result of 30 years of the Hallyu wave appearing, by paving the way for music groups of generation 1 (HOT, Shinhwa, SES..), the development of generation 2 (Big Bang, SNSD, 2NE1…).

The accumulated experiences have helped Koreans create Blackpink and BTS – music groups that conquer the world market. They are uniform in appearance, choreography, ability to speak good English, music that is accessible to international tastes, professional and effective communication methods…

Blackpink’s concert in Hanoi showed Vietnamese audiences the importance of the cultural industry in the 4.0 era, the difference of international concerts.

However, to realize expectations about the performance industry in Vietnam, I’m afraid it’s still too early.

However, “no journey of a thousand miles does not begin with a single step”. With the determination, synchronization and creative efforts of the State, cultural workers and audiences, surely the “sweet fruits” will come one day not too far away.
