BAFTA Awards 2024: Emma Stone always has her mother behind her

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has just organized awards for the most outstanding works and artists in the fields of film, television and video games in the UK last year. This is one of the most prestigious awards in the world and is considered “Oscar money” when it is highly predictive of Oscar results.

Besides Oppenheimer, Poor Things directed by Yorgos Lanthimos was the standout film at the awards ceremony with 5 wins, including the Best Actress award for Emma Stone.

Shedding tears on stage when talking about her mother

On the BAFTA award podium, after joking about mastering a British accent to play Bella Baxter in Poor Things, Emma Stone shed tears as she honored her mother, Krista Stone.

“I want to say this, in case I don’t have the chance again” – the actress was emotional – “I really want to thank my mother because she is the most wonderful person in the world that I know. She inspires me. me every day. She makes me believe in the craziest ideas, believe that I can achieve things like this. I am extremely grateful to her.”

“Without my mother, none of this would exist, nor would my entire life. So, I thank you very much,” she added.

And indeed, in every step of Stone’s career, there is always the figure of her mother.

Emily Jean “Emma” Stone was born in 1988 in Arizona, USA. Her father is a general construction contractor and her mother is a housewife. She has a lot of Swedish, German, English, Scottish and Irish blood.

Mrs. Krista Stone had to work very hard with her daughter because since childhood, Emma Stone was often sick and cried. She cried so much that her vocal cords developed calluses and calluses, leading to her characteristic hoarse voice today.

Growing up, Stone admitted to being “loud” and “bossy”. She also has a high sense of control, so even though she doesn’t like going to school, she “always makes sure she gets all A’s”. However, Stone’s social skills were low due to suffering from panic attacks and anxiety since childhood.

“The first time I had a panic attack, I was sitting in my friend’s house thinking it was on fire. I called my mom and she took me home. And for the next three years, it didn’t stop,” Stone recalls. -“Most days, I have to go see the nurse at lunch and just wring my hands. I always ask my mom to tell me exactly how the day will go, only to ask again just 30 minutes later. second”.

And from then on, she did not want to leave her mother. It seemed that Stone would become a child who could only stay at home, but fortunately, she had a passion for acting very early – at the age of 4 – for acting. She initially wanted to pursue a career in comedy, but later switched her focus to musical theater and studied voice for several years. She began acting at age 11 in the play The Wind In The Willows.

Stone was homeschooled for two years, but during that time, she appeared in 16 productions at the Phoenix Valley Youth Theater and performed improv. Around the same time, she went to Los Angeles and auditioned for a role in the Nickelodeon television series All That but was unsuccessful.

Her parents supported their daughter, sending Stone to private acting lessons with a local acting coach who had worked at the famous talent agency William Morris in the 1970s.

During his first semester at private school Xavier College Preparatory, Stone decided to drop out of school to pursue his dream of becoming an actor. She prepared a PowerPoint presentation for her parents titled The Hollywood Project, to convince them to allow her to move to Hollywood to pursue an acting career. In early 2004, her mother followed her daughter to Los Angeles, determined to conquer the film capital.

Here, Stone studied online for high school, worked part-time at a pet food store, and applied for every show on Disney Channel or every sitcom. “No one accepted me,” she said.

“Without my mother, none of this would exist, nor would my life. So, thank you very much” – Emma Stone.

Turn defeat into victory

But with talent and patience, Emma Stone began to have small roles. After a series of less successful small television roles, she was well received when she starred in teen comedy series such as Superbad (2007), Zombieland (2009) and Easy A (2010). In it, she had the main role in Easy A.

Following this breakthrough, she starred in the romantic comedy Crazy, Stupid, Love (2011) and the film The Help (2011). At the same time, she gained wider recognition as Gwen Stacy in the superhero film 2012’s hero The Amazing Spider-Man and its 2014 sequel.

Besides commercial success, Stone also gradually increased his acting reputation. She received Academy Award nominations for Best Supporting Actress for playing a recovering drug addict in Birdman (2014) and Abigail Masham in The Favorite (2018). For her role as an aspiring actress in the romantic musical film La La Land (2016), she won the Academy Award for Best Actress.

With this movie Poor Things, Stone not only stars but also participates in film production for the first time. Before BAFTA, she won a Golden Globe and a critics’ choice award for the role. She is also nominated in the Best Actress category at SAG this weekend and at the Oscars in March.

In Poor Things, Stone plays Bella Baxter, a woman who died by suicide and is later brought back to life by a strange surgeon. Bella still has the body of an adult woman but has the brain of a newborn. As her brain gradually develops into that of a young adult, Bella leaves the doctor to begin an adventure with a man who is obsessed with her.

This is a very stressful and challenging role for even a veteran actor like Stone. But thanks to that, this role created a big step forward not only for Stone’s career but also personally.

Like when she was a child, she was still extremely worried when she had to leave her mother. Just like when she was a child, even though she knew the house was not on fire, her crisis was still there. “I once read a story like this. That when an actor had to perform very dramatic scenes, crises and monologues for 90 minutes on stage every night in the theater, his body would feel like he had just had an earache. car accident. That comes from the fact that our heart is pounding, we are having strong physical reactions to the emotions we are asking ourselves to experience” – she said.

“Even knowing that you are acting, knowing that what is happening in the movie is not real and is staged, an actor cannot be subjective about what he or she will experience” – she added. .

But the difference is, now, Stone has turned that worry into something useful. “I want to tell young people struggling with anxiety that in many ways, I consider it a form of superpower” – Stone contemplates – “If we can use it for useful things, Turning those excited emotions into creativity, anxiety is like special fuel, helping us get out of bed and do everything. It’s truly a gift.”
