Met Gala 2018: Emilia Clarke ups the style stakes as she stuns in dramatic strapless gown at Catholic themed event

She’s earned herself a legion of fans, thanks to her iconic role as Daenerys Targaryen, or the Mother of Dragons, in the hit show Game Of Thrones.

And Emilia Clarke made sure to command attention as she slipped into a Dolce & Gabbana strapless gown for the Heavenly Bodies: Fashion & The Catholic Imagination Costume Institute Gala at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York on Monday.

The 31-year-old London native upped the style stakes in her haute couture look which featured a deep V-neckline which showcased her decolletage and teased at her cleavage while she worked the cream carpet.

Her ornate lace show-stopper featured delicate gold filigree embroidery which covered the majority of the piece and helped highlight her slender waist.

The gown also boasted fresco-inspired paintings on the skirt which helped elevate her interpretation of the theme.

Continuing the high fashion attire, she worked a dramatic beauty look that accentuated her alabaster skin with a heavy dusting of hot pink blush which offset her bold red lip.

Emilia worked her peroxide blonde hair into a sweeping chignon and placed a statement gold crown over her locks which complemented her drop-earrings.

The great and good of the fashion, movie, music and entertainment worlds were out in force for the annual spectacular, which is hosted on the first Monday of every May at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

Stars at the event spend the evening treading between three locations within the spectacular setting, as the exhibition spreads between the Anna Wintour Costume Center, the medieval galleries at the main location, and at the Cloisters, uptown.

This year’s theme is Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination, following last year’s Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between and 2016’s Manus x Machina: Fashion In An Age Of Technology.

Making a statement: Her standout look featured a striking long train which was accentuated as she walked up the carpet

The Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination exhibition displays 40 Vatican vestments, including Pope Benedict XV’s silk cape and the bishop’s hat of Pope Leo XIII, alongside pieces by Chanel, John Galliano, Balenciaga and Versace.

The theme is being considered the most controversial to date, due to the fact the fashion garments being put on display are sitting alongside ancient, sacred artifacts.

Curator Andrew Bolton, defended the display, saying: ‘Some might consider fashion to be an unfitting or unseemly medium by which to engage with ideas about the sacred or the divine, but dress is central to any discussion about religion.’

Blonde ambition: Emilia worked her peroxide blonde hair into a sweeping chignon and placed a statement gold crown with floral detailing over her locks which complemented her drop-earrings

Having fun: Emilia posed for photos with Andrew Garfield, Daniel Kaluuya, Cynthia Erivo, Letitia Wright, John Boyega and Trevor Noah

Vogue editor, Met trustee and Gala co-chair, Anna Wintour, continued: ‘It affirms religious allegiances and it asserts religious differences. Fashion reflects the world around us and nobody understands that more clearly than Andrew’.

Katy Perry’s 2013 ensemble seemed to be a forward thinking nod to the theme when she attended the PUNK: Chaos to Couture-themed bash on the arm of D&G head honchos Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabanna.

Her heavily embellished gown was adorned with religious imagery while she added in statement crucifix earrings, a crown and heels with a cross on the heel.

All a giggle: The stars couldn’t help but laugh as they attempted to get their picture taken
