OGAE Song Contest 2023 Results: The U.k.’s Harry Styles Wins With “As It Was”

Big congrats to OGAE United Kingdom. They’re basking in the glory of winning the OGAE Song Contest 2023. Harry Styles brought the crown home with his global hit “As It Was,” handing the Brits their eighth triumph. They’re the undisputed power house of the informal fan contest.

The vibes were as electric as Australia, the gracious host nation, who snagged second place thanks to Kylie Minogue’s “Padam Padam,” while Italy claimed a well-deserved third place with Annalisa. She’s competing in Sanremo 2024. Is this a good omen for her journey this year?

For those not in the know, the OGAE Song Contest is a spirited showdown among the national branches of OGAE, the ultimate fan club of the Eurovision Song Contest. Since its inception in 1986, the OGAE Song Contest has been a shining star in the world of music competitions and is widely regarded as one of the most successful contests associated with Eurovision. This time around, the rulebook got a refresh – songs didn’t have to stick to the official language of their country.

Big shoutout to OGAE Australia for hosting the event, especially after their 2021 victory with “Fly Away” by Tones & I. This drama-free edition will be welcome news to them. OGAE Australia was initially set to host in 2022, but the contest was ultimately cancelled over disagreements over whether Russia should be allowed to participate.

Only OGAE members can vote in the OGAE Song Contest. So, for a bit of fun, we launched our own unofficial poll back in September. After counting more than 3,800 votes, we have a winner — and it’s not Harry Styles.

Kylie Minogue’s “Padam Padam” emerged as the crowd-pleaser in the Wiwi world, stealing hearts with an impressive 14.06% of the votes. Our girl finished as runner-up in the actual OGAE Song Contest.

Finland’s KUUMAA took second with our readers with their song “Tulipalo.” They earned 11% of all votes (despite finishing a lowly 25th in the official contest).

And in third it’s Norway’s KEiiNO, who continued their global charm offensive with a solid third place with “Nights of Thunder” at 9.3%.
