Marvel Fans Nitpick Avengers: Infinity War Scene as Continuity Error Goes Viral

A scene from Avengers: Infinity War went viral after an eagle-eyed fan observed a glaring error that fans now can’t unsee.

A Marvel fan finds another glaring discrepancy to nitpick in Avengers: Infinity War, reinforcing the enduring appeal of the MCU Infinity Saga’s culminating films.

As the culminating stretch of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame remain two of the franchise’s most rewatchable films. It has been over four years since Endgame wrapped up, but Marvel fans haven’t stopped proposing “what-if?” stories, reimagining the MCU’s Infinity War saga with creative plot twists. Many also combed through the films for Easter eggs or references to past and future MCU films. However, an eagle-eyed Marvel fan instead noticed a glaring mistake in an Infinity War scene and shared screenshots on Reddit.

The scene in question involved Iron Man and Thanos duking it out during the battle of Titan, after Thanos used the Power and Space Stone to hurl the planet’s moon toward the surface. Reddit user Motor-Anteater-8965 pointed out that Tony Stark’s facial hair changed mid-dialogue after he said, “You throw another moon at me, and I’m gonna lose it.” A close-up of Tony’s face did show a lighter and more unkempt mustache and beard, both different from the character’s clean-cut facial hair otherwise consistent across other MCU films. The discrepancy is likely a production oversight and doesn’t take away from the overall appeal of the film.

Fixing Tony Stark’s Continuity Mistake

Reddit users pitched in with their own theories explaining the difference. Aside from the most obvious reason, a user proposed a bigger plot hole left by a deleted scene where Thanos used the Reality Stone to change Tony’s mustache and throw him off his game. Another said a “wizard did it,” which could be referring to Doctor Strange’s presence at the scene, or it’s a Simpsons reference. Probably the best theory assumed that Infinity War‘s production team noticed the mistake, and after remembering how Henry Cavill’s mustache was fixed with CGI in Justice League, they thought it best just to leave Stark’s facial hair as is.

While many of the MCU’s discrepancies were unnoticed post-production and made it to the theatrical cut of the films, others were deliberately added to throw fans off the scent and keep them guessing. A standout example would be the tail-end of the Avengers: Infinity War official trailer, which shows Bruce Banner Hulked-out and running alongside Black Widow on the Wakanda battlefield. In that movie, Banner failed to bring out the Hulk and instead used Iron Man’s Mark XLIV Hulkbuster armor to face the onslaught of enemies.
