Mauricio Pochettino can’t confirm whether £110k-a-week Chelsea player is staying

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino was coy on the future of one of his players earlier today.

Mauricio Pochettino was asked whether Thiago Silva will be at Chelsea next season but said that is a question for the central defender rather than him. Evening Standard journalist Nizaar Kinsella relayed his quotes on X.

Silva recently hinted that this could actually be his final season at Stamford Bridge.

The 39-year-old is out of contract in the summer and does not look to be any closer to putting pen to paper on a new one.

He has been a hugely important figure for Pochettino this season, missing just one game in the Premier League. Silva’s existing deal sees him take home £110,000 a week (Spotrac).

Mauricio Pochettino coy on Thiago Silva’s future

When asked about Silva’s future and the recent comments he made about it, Pochettino told reporters in his pre-match press conference: “I didn’t hear what he said after the game.

“We didn’t talk about next season. We are so focused on this season. That question is more for him than me.”

Pochettino says questions about Silva’s future should be put to the player himself, but the Argentine should be making it clear that the Brazil international needs to be retained.

As mentioned earlier, Silva has been key for Chelsea this season. Why exactly do they seem to be open to letting him go, because he turns 40 this year?

Well age never stopped the club from signing the former Paris Saint-Germain captain — though he did arrive under a different regime — and it has not prevented him from performing at Stamford Bridge either.

Bearing that in mind, there really is not a good argument for letting Silva go at the end of the campaign, but it looks like that is what is going to happen.
