Real Madrid demolished Girona by a 4-0 scoreline on Saturday night. Taking on the league’s second-ranked team, they dished out their best performance of the season to convincingly devastate Michel’s men who looked helpless at the end of the 90 minutes.
The clear standout performer on the night was Vinicius Jr, who opened the scoring in the fifth minute of play through an unreal Golazo. The Brazilian went on to assist the team’s next three goals and dominated the left flank like none other.
Game of emotions
While Real Madrid experienced joy and unfiltered ecstasy last night, the story for Girona had only heartbreak and devastation written all over. Yan Couto, the team’s Brazilian right-back, was amongst those more deeply affected by the result and was in tears after the game.
After all, the Brazilian failed to control his compatriot Vinicius on the night and was single-handedly responsible for three of the four goals conceded. Further, he even gave away a penalty in the final minute of the game which Joselu unfortunately missed.
Yet, such is the beauty of the game that the rivalry was forgotten immediately after the full-time whistle. As revealed by Fabrizio Romano, Vinicius Jr went to comfort his compatriot after the game and hugged him to show his support. He was not alone, as Rodrygo Goes and Jude Bellingham also expressed their support.
On Real Madrid’s radar
Couto has been on Real Madrid’s radar for a long time now as the club continues their hunt for a long-term fix to the right-back position. The player is aware that a move to Real Madrid is an option and has even mentally fixated on not renewing his contract to push for the same.
Last night’s game provided Los Blancos’ administration with the ideal chance to judge Couto first-hand, and it is safe to say that his audition did not go well. He was all over the place against Vinicius Jr, and far from convincing as an option for Real Madrid.
Needless to say, that could be another factor behind his overwhelming feeling at full-time and one hopes he comes back stronger and proves his calibre to the Merengues’ administration in the coming games.
