Unveiling the Pride of the Seas: HII’s Ingalls Shipbuilding Introduces the America-class Amphibious Assault Ship Bougainville (LHA 8)

Ingalls Shipbuilding Achieves Milestone with Launch of Bougainville LHA 8

In a remarkable feat of engineering and teamwork, HII’s Ingalls Shipbuilding division celebrated the successful launch of the Navy’s third America-class amphibious assault ship, the Bougainville (LHA 8), into the Pascagoula River on Saturday. This milestone event marks a significant step forward in naval capabilities and underscores the dedication of Ingalls Shipbuilding to deliver cutting-edge vessels for our nation’s defense.

The process leading up to the launch was meticulously orchestrated. On September 9, utilizing translation railcars, the Bougainville was carefully transported from land to Ingalls’ floating dry dock. Here, the skilled Ingalls team conducted final preparations, ensuring every detail was meticulously attended to before the ship’s momentous entry into the water. Notably, the Bougainville is the first in the America class to feature a well deck, enhancing its versatility by combining aviation capabilities with surface assault capabilities.

Central to the design of the America-class ships is their adaptability and multi-functionality. Whether operating as part of an expeditionary strike group, an amphibious task force, or an amphibious ready group, these vessels are equipped to excel in diverse and challenging environments. With state-of-the-art medical facilities and the capacity to accommodate advanced aircraft such as the F-35B Joint Strike Fighter and MV-22 Osprey, the Bougainville represents the pinnacle of modern naval engineering.

Gene Miller, Ingalls Shipbuilding Amphibious Ship Program Manager, expressed pride in the team’s achievement, emphasizing the dedication and collaboration that have been integral to the project. “This launch is a significant accomplishment for our entire LHA shipbuilding team, and we are honored to be building such a versatile ship for our Navy and Marine Corps partners,” Miller remarked.

The launch of the Bougainville builds upon Ingalls’ long-standing legacy of delivering critical vessels to the U.S. Navy. With 15 large-deck amphibious ships already delivered, Ingalls continues to lead the way in naval innovation. The company remains committed to advancing U.S. national security, delivering not only powerful ships but also cutting-edge solutions across domains, from unmanned systems to cyber technologies.

As the construction of the Bougainville progresses, attention now turns to the next ship in the pipeline, the Fallujah (LHA 9), reaffirming Ingalls’ ongoing contribution to bolstering the nation’s defense capabilities.

In conclusion, the launch of the Bougainville LHA 8 stands as a testament to the unwavering commitment of HII’s Ingalls Shipbuilding division to excellence and innovation in service of the nation. With a workforce of 43,000 strong and a legacy spanning over 135 years, HII continues to shape the future of naval warfare, ensuring peace and freedom for generations to come.
