In 2018, at the tender age of nine, Obocho embarked on a journey that would defy expectations and ignite hope within his community. His mission? To create Obocho’s Closet, a thrift store dedicated to helping low-income families affordably clothe their children while championing the importance of education.

Obocho’s Closet was born out of a simple yet profound moment of realization. As a young boy inspired by the heroes he admired on screen, Obocho yearned to acquire toys from the movie “Avengers: Infinity War.” When financial constraints thwarted his plans, he turned adversity into opportunity, selling his own clothes to fund his cherished toys. In that moment, Obocho understood that the struggle he faced was not his alone. With unwavering determination, he set out to alleviate the burdens of families facing similar challenges.

Through community donations and a successful GoFundMe campaign that raised over $10,000, Obocho brought his vision to life. Since its inception three years ago, Obocho’s Closet has served as a beacon of hope, offering quality clothing and shoes for children at affordable prices, all under $10. What began as an online thrift shop soon outgrew its digital confines, culminating in the opening of a brick-and-mortar store in Brooklyn’s Flatbush neighborhood in December.

But Obocho’s journey has not been without its trials. Like many businesses, Obocho’s Closet faced adversity during the pandemic, forcing the closure of its physical store. Undeterred, Obocho pivoted his operations online, adapting to the changing landscape with resilience and fortitude. Despite the challenges, Obocho remains optimistic, his spirit undimmed by hardship.
