Schmeichel, who won five Premier League titles and the Champions League with United, believes that the club needs a major overhaul.

“The club needs to change,” he told Sky Sports. “It’s not good enough. The players are not good enough. The manager is not good enough. The whole structure of the club needs to change.”

Schmeichel was also critical of the club’s recruitment policy, which has seen them spend over £1 billion on players in recent years.

“We’ve spent a lot of money on players who are not good enough,” he said. “We need to get rid of them and bring in better players.”

Schmeichel did, however, offer some words of support for Ten Hag, who he believes is the right man to turn things around at Old Trafford.

“I think he’s a good manager,” he said. “He’s done a good job at Ajax. But he needs time. He needs to be given the chance to build his own team.”

It remains to be seen whether Ten Hag will be able to turn things around at United, but Schmeichel’s comments suggest that the club is in need of a major change.
