The world was shocked when Argentine football legend, Lionel Messi, decided to play in the United States of America, joining David Beckham’s Inter Miami. Moving on a  free transfer, Messi joined the Florida-based club in July 2023 and has played only 6 matches for the club. Despite Beckham planning to enlist Messi’s help in growing football in the States, Sergio Aguero believes Messi will leave really soon.

Speaking to Diario AS, a Spanish sports newspaper, Aguero said the 8-time Ballon D’or winner wants to return to his first European Club, FC Barcelona. The former Manchester City, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid striker said his close friend loves and identifies with the club and the city.

He did add that the two did not speak about his return in detail, but Aguero believes it’s only a matter of time before he returns.

Sometimes I just think it’s a matter of time…Leo always said that he loves Barcelona. He is very identified with the club and city.

Sergio Aguero said as reported by Diario AS

Messi left Barcelona due to the club’s financial issues. Due to a new salary cap introduced by the Spanish FA, Barcelona were unable to register the Argentinian and were forced to release him. The Star then went to Paris Saint Germain, where he reunited with his ex-teammate Neymar Jr. He played 2 seasons in France before having a falling out with the club officials,  which led to him not extending his contract.

Currently, Messi is playing in the MLS and did not have the best of seasons, so there are also reports that state he could return to Newell’s Old Boys, his boyhood club.

David Beckham wants to ensure Lionel Messi helps grow football in the USA

David Beckham was instrumental in bringing Lionel Messi to Inter Miami. In an interview with The Times, he revealed it was an effort that took over 3 years. He added that without Apple, the deal wasn’t possible as well. He signed a 2.5-year contract with Beckham’s club and is apparently earning $50-$60 Million dollars per year.

Despite securing his services as a player, Beckham wants Messi to be connected with the club even after his retirement. The former LA Galaxy star believes signing Messi could make the MLS an even more attractive destination for football stars. Along with that, he wants Messi to be involved in growing Football in the United States and Inter Miami. The Argentine’s contract assures him a stake in the club once he stops playing football as well.
