Erling Haaland’s most recent Man City goal breaks the scoring record for the Champions League

Erling Haaland’s strike against RB Leipzig has made him become the quickest player in Champions League history to score 40 goals.

The Manchester City superstar became the fastest player to hit 50 Premier League goals on Saturday, doing so in just 48 matches as he netted in their 1-1 draw at home to Liverpool.

And on his return to continental action, the striker was not shy to set another record as City trailed Leipzig.

Haaland’s effort against the German side was his 40th Champions League goal during his career so far in 35th competition appearance.

He is now the quickest player to hit such a tally as well as the youngest, doing so aged 23 years and 130 days.

It was also Haaland’s 12th goal in eight appearances against Leipzig, the most goals he has scored against a single side.

City would have been relieved to finally see him hit the back of the net as they fell two goals down in the first half.

Lois Openda left the Etihad Stadium stunned as he exploited the reigning champions’ defence and struck twice.

Haaland hit back early in the second half, with City still chasing a win as they look to maintain their 100 per cent record in Group G.

Phil Foden made it 2-2 as Leipzig failed to hold onto their lead, with the England international calmly slotting into the corner.

Liverpool loanee Fabio Carvalho thought he had restored the visitors’ lead by his goal was ruled out for offside.

But City made it 3-2 on the approach to full-time when Julian Alvarez found the target inside the area.

Pep Guardiola’s side have now made it five wins from five in Group G as they close in on the last 16.
