Chelsea’s Levi Colwill is definitely a centre-back playing at left-back this season.
That is according to ESPN pundit Craig Burley.
Levi Colwill’s shown great versatility during his first year in Chelsea’s senior squad to slot in at left-back, but we agree it’s pretty obvious that he struggles in the role.
Instead, the 20-year-old’s far more comfortable in his preferred centre-back spot.
Speaking after Chelsea’s 2-1 win over Crystal Palace this week, ESPN pundit Craig Burley did criticise Blues youngster Colwill.
He highlighted that the England defender was completely caught out of position for Palace’s goal from Michael Olise.
Burley told ESPN: “Colwill’s a centre-half playing left-back. A centre-half who could go on to have a very good career, he’s a pretty good player, but I think you see him defending the back post it wasn’t great… It’s different defending the back post as a full-back than it is as a centre-half.”
Levi Colwill out of position
It’s frustrated us all season whenever’s Colwill’s in the starting XI at left-back.
We can understand the logic of using him at full-back to bolster the defensive line, but he can look a bit clumsy in that role.
We’re desperate for Blues head coach Mauricio Pochettino to give him a run of starts as a central defender.
Speaking via talkSPORT today, Mario Melchiot agreed that Colwill is not a natural in the left-back position.
If Pochettino is going to continue overlooking Ian Maatsen for the left-back role, we really need Ben Chilwell or Marc Cucurella back from injury soon.
