Mahomes has had an injury-hit year and could benefit from a week of rest before the playoffs.
His Chiefs won the AFC West for an eighth straight year thanks to Sunday’s win over the Cincinnati Bengals.
Kansas City cannot move from the No 3 seed in the AFC – a position they are unfamiliar with.
The Chiefs are used to being a higher seed with a first-round bye and being home throughout the playoffs.
But they’ve stumbled to a 10-6 record in an uncharacteristic year and will host a playoff game on Wild Card Weekend either January 13, 14 or 14.
And, speaking after Sunday’s win over Cincinnati, Mahomes revealed he could get next weekend off.
He said: “I kind of just let Coach Reid make all those decisions.”
“If he wants us to build off this momentum I’ll be ready to roll.
“If he wants to give us some rest I’ll get that rest, prepare for whoever we’re going to play and get ready for the playoffs.”
Mahomes has battled injury and illness during a tough season.
He suffered an ankle “scare” earlier this season against the Chicago Bears.
The quarterback was fine to continue playing but picked up a hand injury as well in November.
He traveled to Germany for the Chiefs’ game in week 9 and played with tape on his non-throwing hand.
Kansas City won that game against the Miami Dolphins 21-14 in front of 50,023 fans in Frankfurt, Germany.
He also battled illness ahead of the game – which possibly had an impact on a shock Week 8 loss.
Kansas City was beaten by their division rival Denver Broncos on October 29.
And just last month, Mahomes popped up on the injury report with a pectoral issue.
