You may have seen the gworlies on TikTok giving themself chunky highlight makeovers to look like Bratz dolls – if you haven’t go check it out, it’s cute. But those dolls were of course inspired by the huns, It girls and icons of their time! Back in the ’00s you wanted your highlights to be thick stripes through your hair, that was the lewk. Fake was very much in. I’m not old enough to verify, but I think those terrible extensions may not have been accidental.
In the last year or so, as with all things 00s, chunky highlights have been making a comeback: From Bella Hadid’s pin straight stripes to Khloé Kardashian’s white blonde streaks. And showing us all how it’s done, Rihanna’s latest jaw-dropping Savage X Fenty Valentine’s shoot features black and blonde striped highlights – we can practically hear the entire cast of The Hills and Laguna Beach swooning.
Worn in a big, bouncy, voluminous blowout, the warmth to the blonde deviates it from the classic skunk stripe, for a look that feels somehow simultaneously unique and a total homage. It takes some very clever blending and toning to make black and blonde look this good together, especially while still maintaining chunky contrast. Witchcraft.
That hot pink lip is also doubling down on that ’00s nostalgia, and thanks to Fenty global makeup artist Priscilla Ono – and Miss Fenty herself’s MUA – we know exactly what product it is.
