A new 2024 release from Sony’s Spider-Man Universe is tracking to break a long-running Marvel movie streak, and that would be shocking.
The projected opening weekend for Madame Web would break a major negative record for Sony’s Spider-Man movies. Madame Web‘s story is set to bring some excitement to the SSU. While the Marvel Cinematic Universe only has one Spider-Man in Tom Holland — with Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parkers coming from the multiverse — Madame Web features four characters with Spider-Man-related powers. However, that might not be enough to guarantee the SSU movie’s success.
According to specialized box office tracking website Box Office Pro, Madame Web is tracking to open domestically with $25-$35 million in its opening weekend. That would give the film the lowest-grossing domestic opening weekend ever for a Sony Spider-Man movie. Box Office Pro also projects Madame Web to end its domestic run in the $56-$101 million range, which could make it the lowest-grossing of the 2024 Marvel movies.
How Madame Web’s Early Opening Weekend Box Office Projections Compare To Other Sony Spider-Man Movies
If Madame Web ends up having a domestic opening weekend in the $25-$35 million range, then the movie will have the lowest-grossing debut for a Sony Spider-Man film since Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire’s 2002 Spider-Man was released. While Madame Web would fall to the bottom of the live-action Sony Spider-Man movies list, at least it would not be that far below the current lowest domestic debut of the franchise. That is — if Madame Web hits the high end of its projected domestic opening weekend.

In the case that Madame Web manages to hit the high end of projections for its domestic opening weekend, the movie would fall just under Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The animated film went on to win several awards, including a Best Animated Feature Oscar, and set up a game-changing franchise of animated movies. It likely stands as the lowest opening weekend for a Sony Spider-Man movie due to the animated medium and many not knowing about the movie’s impressive story and visuals beforehand.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse‘s explosive domestic opening weekend saw a huge bump for the animated franchise, taking third place among Sony’s Spider-Man movies. If Madame Web goes on to surpass projections, perhaps a sequel could see a somewhat similar bump for its opening. Regarding other SSU movies, Madame Web‘s projected domestic opening weekend comes the closest to that of Morbius, which grossed only $39 million. Given how that movie was panned by critics and audiences alike, Madame Web opening below Morbius, with the two films sharing writers, would be a very bad sign for the new movie’s box office potential.
