Olympic gymnast Simone Biles hit the 2021 Met Gala red carpet in a three-in-one, night sky-inspired dress designed by Beckett Fogg and Piotrek Panszczyk of Area.
Her sparkling style included a star-embellished black catsuit, a mini dress and – most notably – an 88-pound skirt covered in Swarovski crystals.
“How do I feel in the dress? It’s definitely heavy, but I feel beautiful, strong, and empowered,” Biles, who attended the gala as a guest of Athleta, told Vogue while trying on the weighty look.
Creating the ensemble just might have been an Olympic-level feat of its own; Panszczyk told the fashion glossy that over 100 people worked for 6,6500 hours to create the pieces, which they finished “around 4 a.m.” the night before the big event.

“I personally don’t think anybody’s dress is gonna be better than mine,” Biles added of the out-of-this-world outfit, which required more than 17,000 feet of crystal chains to create.
“I’m sure everyone feels like that going in, but this is going to be a statement,” she continued.
The crystal-coated style also featured feathered elements, inspired by showgirl Josephine Baker, the first black woman to star in a major film.

While some call the Met Gala the Super Bowl of fashion, Biles was fresh off of another major sporting event.
In August, she returned home from the Tokyo Olympics, where she sat out of multiple events a to focus on her mental health.
While she ended up taking home a bronze medal for her performance on the balance beam, perhaps her latest look was channeling the silver medal she scored in the team competition.
