Oliver Hudson got candid about the childhood trauma he experienced while growing up with Goldie Hawn as his mother.
The 47-year-old actor, who is Hawn and her ex-husband Bill Hudson’s first-born child, revealed that he had completed a Hoffman Institute course to understand his trauma on a recent episode of his Sibling Rivalry podcast.
While expecting it to mainly focus on his relationship with his estranged father, the Scream Queens alum was surprised to discover he had the most ‘trauma’ about his Oscar-winning mom.
‘My mother was the one that I had almost the most trauma about, interestingly enough, because she was my primary caregiver and I was with her all of the time, so I felt unprotected at times,’ Oliver shared.
‘She would be working. She had new boyfriends that I didn’t really like,” he continued, emphasized that his mom was simply ‘living her life’ and described her as ‘an amazing mother.’

‘This is my own perception as a child who didn’t have a dad and needed her to be there,’ he clarified.
‘And she just wasn’t [there] sometimes and she came out far more than even my dad who wasn’t there.’
The actor and his sister Kate Hudson, 44, were mainly raised by the First Wives Club actress on her own after she split with their biological father Bill in 1980.
Goldie would end up meeting longtime partner Kurt Russell in 1983, when Oliver was seven years old.
Following Goldie and Bill’s separation, there was a prolonged period of strain in the relationship between Bill and Oliver and Kate.
However, the Hoffman Institute course helped Oliver come to a place of understanding for both Bill and Goldie, according to the actor.
‘The forgiveness and the compassion that you feel towards them at the end of this process is unbelievable because then you realize that they’re only repeating the ship that they went through, you know, with their parents,’ he explained on his podcast.
‘The forgiveness of my father was huge because his dad left him when he was five years old in the middle of the night, gone. You know, my dad didn’t do exactly that, but essentially he bailed, you know, so I can’t always help but think when we’re parenting, like what am I imprinting upon [my kids].’

Oliver has been married to his wife, Erinn Bartlett, since 2006. Together, they have sons Wilder, 16, and Bodhi, 13, as well as daughter Rio, 10.
Following his divorce from Hawn, Bill went on to have two children — daughter Emily and son Zachary — with Laverne and Shirley star, and then-wife, Cindy Williams.
In 2006, Bill also welcomed daughter Lalania.
In a 2011 interview with DailyMail.com, Bill slammed Goldie for pitting Oliver and Kate against him once she started dating Kurt.
‘When we split up, she never had a bad word to say about me,’ Bill told the Daily Mail. ‘But when Kurt came on the scene, the narrative changed and I became the big, bad wolf.
‘I would say to her “Goldie, why are you trashing me and saying I’m an absent father when it’s simply not the case?” and she’d laugh and go ‘Oh Bill, you know it makes for a better story.’”
However, over time, the situation has improved.
In fact, Oliver acknowledged in 2018 that he had even exchanged ‘some texts’ with his estranged father.

In 2016, Kate spoke about her relationship with her biological father, expressing forgiveness for his abandonment during her childhood.
‘I really do recognize whatever those issues are, it’s just something that he has to live with, and that must be painful for him. So I forgive him,’ she said during an interview on The Howard Stern Show.
Despite their past challenges, the Russell-Hawn family, which also includes Goldie and Kurt’s son Wyatt Russell, remains incredibly close.
Oliver previously praised Goldie and Kurt for being ‘amazing people, amazing grandparents, amazing parents,” in a 2021 interview with US Weekly.
