Production for the next installment of the action thriller franchise began soon after the release of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum in May 2019.
Last April, director Chad Stahelski told Collider that the creative team set a high bar for the new movie’s development. He mentioned they had presented a “big” idea and were contemplating going beyond a simple John Wick 4, with a broader thematic approach.
“We’re talking about doing a little bit more than a [John Wick 4], or something like that, and trying to develop that,” Stahelski explained.
He also revealed that they had a solid storyline in mind and were pleased to have a clear direction for the upcoming film.
“I’m in a happy place where we are in development…we’re in a place where we know what we want to do and where we want to do it,” the director said.
Filming for the fourth chapter of the series is set to take place in Berlin and Paris, as well as New York City and Japan.
Initially, the crew planned to shoot back-to-back for a potential fifth John Wick film, but this idea was later dropped, leaving the fifth movie’s future uncertain.
John Wick 4 was originally scheduled for release this year, but the CоVID-19 pаndemic delayed its premiere to May 27, 2022.
