Zack Snyder’s sci-fi franchise appears to be expanding, with promising developments for Rebel Moon 3 on Netflix. Building on his fruitful collaboration with the streaming platform, director Zack Snyder has already achieved success with the Army of the Dead series. Now, his sci-fi saga, Rebel Moon, is gaining momentum. Set on a distant moon, the narrative follows Kora, an enigmatic woman tasked with uniting a group of warriors to defend her colony against a ruthless tyrant.
The first installment of Rebel Moon is a single story divided into two movies: 2023’s Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire and its sequel, Part Two: The Scargiver. Zack Snyder has found a perfect creative platform with Netflix, which has fully embraced several of his grand visions. Rebel Moon stands out as one of Netflix’s most ambitious productions, with its epic scope extending beyond just these two movies. In addition to the broader multimedia franchise that Snyder envisions, there are also plans for a third movie in the series, which seems to be on the horizon.
Even though Rebel Moon Part Two: The Scargiver hints at a sequel, the streaming service has not yet approved a third installment. However, lead actress Sofia Boutella has provided some insight into the possibility of Rebel Moon 3.
Zack Snyder confirms Rebel Moon 3
Even with the excitement still buzzing around the second movie in the series, Zack Snyder has confirmed Rebel Moon 3. The busy writer and director announced that he is currently working on the script for what will technically be the second story in the Rebel Moon franchise. Although Netflix has not officially added the title to its upcoming slate, the strong relationship between Snyder and the streamer makes it highly likely that they will support whatever the director of Man of Steel has in mind.
Rebel Moon 3 Cast
Since Rebel Moon 3 hasn’t been confirmed yet, there haven’t been any official cast announcements. However, we can make some educated guesses.
All the surviving rebels from Rebel Moon 2 will likely return. This includes Sofia Boutella as Kora, Djimon Hounsou as Titus, Staz Nair as Tarak, Elise Duffy as Milius, and Cleopatra Coleman as Devra Bloodaxe.
Boutella seems eager to return, even though she told The Direct she hasn’t spoken to Snyder about a third movie yet: “It’ll be quite fun to go back on set with Zack because we all love being part of this project so much.”
Unfortunately, Michiel Huisman’s Gunnar and Doona Bae’s Nemesis died during the battle on Veldt, so they won’t be back in the third movie unless we see them in flashbacks.
We can also anticipate hearing Anthony Hopkins again as Jimmy, and it’s probable that Veldt villagers like Sam (Charlotte Maggi) and Aris (Sky Yang), who was formerly a Motherworld soldier, will return as well.
On the villain side, Fra Fee should return as Regent Balisarius. Ed Skrein might not be back as Atticus Noble, but considering Noble has survived death once already in this series, you can never fully rule him out.
Rebel Moon 3 Plot
The ending of Rebel Moon Part Two: The Scargiver left us hanging, setting up the sequel. Zack Snyder wasted no time in confirming that part 3 will start right where we left off. This means Kora and her team will embark on a mission to find Princess Issa, who was believed to be dead. Their journey won’t just be about rescuing the royal heir but also a chance for Kora to make up for what she believed was her fault in the girl’s supposed demise.
Meanwhile, in Rebel Moon 3, we’ll witness the rebellion’s ongoing growth following their triumph on Veldt. Despite routing Imperial troops, they still have much territory to reclaim to defeat the Motherworld completely. The Veldt warriors will have to form alliances with other planets that share their discontent with the Empire. This sets the stage for more clashes, as the birth of a galactic rebellion is sure to ignite tensions across the cosmos.
Rebel Moon 3 potential release date
As of now, Rebel Moon 3 hasn’t been confirmed by Netflix, so an official release date remains uncertain. While the first two movies had a four-month gap, a third installment might take longer.
Although Snyder is already planning it, co-writer Kurt Johnstad revealed that filming isn’t expected to begin anytime soon. “Zack has already started writing because he’s like that. I think he’s already written the first 30 pages of movie three,” Johnstad shared.
This indicates that filming may not start until at least 2025, or perhaps even later. Hence, fans might have to wait until 2026 or beyond for the next Rebel Moon movie.
