After two live-action animated films, Garfield: The Movie in 2004 and Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties in 2006, this time he World-famous fat cat Garfield returns in Super Bad Fat Cat directed by Mark Dindal. This energetic and humorous animated work immediately caused a stir at the global box office with total revenue after the first week of release reaching over 97 million USD.
Abandoned cat
Many generations of children are familiar with the typical yellow-orange tabby cat, Garfield, who is chubby, lazy, inactive, likes to eat spaghetti, and often shows dissatisfaction with his owner. In this 2024 Fat Cat, the origin of the cat Garfield (voiced by Chris Pratt) is recalled when Garfield is left pitifully abandoned in a rainy alley.
Luckily, he happened to meet Jon (voiced by Nicholas Hoult), who was having dinner alone in an Italian restaurant. From then on, Jon became a devoted owner of Garfield. Some time later, Garfield meets his estranged father Vic (voiced by Samuel L. Jackson) – the same person who abandoned him before. Garfield and his close dog friend Odie follow Vic to venture into a risky heist.
Nearly half a century since his appearance in author Jim Davis’ continuous newspaper comic strip (1978), the attraction of the fat cat Garfield has never diminished. The main reason is because Garfield brings together appropriate characteristics that are widespread in popular culture, with gestures and personalities that are both good and bad, funny and adorable. In the movie Super Fat Cat, Garfield the cat now knows how to order his favorite food through a smartphone application that can translate “meow” into… human language. One notable thing is the appearance of the villain who often threatens Garfield and has a “powerful” voice, the cat Jinx, voiced by actress Hannah Waddingham (pictured).
A special father-son relationship
The relationship between cat Garfield and his father Vic is quite special. At first, Vic was a bad father because he was guilty of abandoning his child. In fact, Vic always cared about Garfield, intending for Jon to adopt his child so that Garfield could grow in a good environment and have an adoptive father capable of taking good care of him. Vic even watched Garfield from afar to see if his child was okay.
The owner loves the cat Garfield.
Vic – Garfield’s father-son relationship is both contrasting, touching and has positive changes (at first cold, then warm), leaving good emotions for the audience. Meanwhile, the relationship between master Jon and Garfield is equally touching when the two meet in a lonely situation, coming together like a complement and comfort to each other.
Super Fat Cat is a funny movie but also has many touching moments. Garfield the cat overcame the sadness of being abandoned to grow up in love. He also learns the lesson of forgiveness for the past and happiness when the father-son relationship is healed. There is a folk saying “hate each other like cats and dogs”, but the friendship between the cat and dog duo Garfield – Odie in the movie brings a positive message about the tolerance of differences and the belief in kindness.
