“Concerning” Harry Maguire moment highlighted as January signing targeted

Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United team are preparing for a crucial Champions League match in Copenhagen after easing the pressure on their manager with a weekend win at Fulham

Manchester United were able to enjoy their weekend after claiming victory over Fulham in Saturday’s early kick-off, but attentions are already turning towards Wednesday night.

United take on Copenhagen at Parken and are looking to complete a Champions League double over the Danish side after Harry Maguire goal decided the meeting at Old Trafford. Victory for United would keep their European chances well and truly alive, but a loss would leave them with no margin for error in their final two group games.

In the lead-up to the midweek action, we’re still getting some fall-out from the win at Craven Cottage as well as some transfer talk. Here are the latest lines from around Old Trafford.

Maguire concerns raised

Headway, a brain injury charity, has called for more work to be done on concussion protocols following an incident involving Harry Maguire. It has been claimed that the relevant protocols were followed after the Manchester United defender clashed with Fulham’s Rodrigo Muniz, but the charity have called for temporary substitutions for those incidents where concussion is a risk.

“The incident with Harry Maguire is concerning for a number of reasons,” Headway chief executive Luke Griggs said. “An opponent’s shoulder strikes the side of his head; minutes later he goes down on his haunches, showing clear signs of discomfort.

“After a brief on-pitch assessment – again highlighting the nonsensical lack of temporary concussion substitutes in football – he was allowed to continue. The sight of the referee then having to intervene in the second half when the player continued to look in difficulty was deeply concerning.”

Headway also referred to a second incident involving Maguire in the second half. The England international completed the game, though, with United later saying he had received treatment for a hand injury during the second period.

World Cup winner targeted

Manchester United are eyeing up a move for Argentina midfielder Guido Rodriguez, according to reports in Spain. The World Cup winner has been on the club’s radar in the past, and interest could be renewed as the Real Betis star approaches the end of his contract.

Rodriguez could be available on the cheap in January, while a pre-contract agreement is also a possibility. However, it has been suggested the former Club America man would rather remain with his current club until the summer

Betis haven’t given up hope of keeping Rodriguez on board, though he has yet to extend the deal he signed upon joining in 2020. The 29-year-old was part of his country’s World Cup winning squad in 2022, though he made only one appearance during that run to glory.

Ashworth going nowhere despite Neville’s Man Utd comment

Newcastle United director of football Dan Ashworth insists he has no plans to leave St James’ Park after Gary Neville suggested he was just what Manchester United need. Ashworth, who knows Neville from the pair’s respective work at the Footballl Association over the years, played down suggestions he might be on the move again.

“I know him and Phil [Neville] from their England days,” Ashworth said. “He’s written some very kind things and thank you, Gary.

When addressing his own future, he compared his situation to that of Newcastle boss Eddie Howe. “Same situation as Eddie, I think,” he said. “I’m really happy, it’s a brilliant city, club and project. I’m thoroughly engaged in throwing myself into all of those things and really enjoying the challenge.”
