Dustin Poirier would accept a fight with Conor McGregor at UFC 300

Former UFC interim lightweight champion Dustin Poirier said he would ‘probably’ accept a fourth fight with rival Conor McGregor if offered for UFC 300. Poirier, 34, told the UFC’s Megan Olivi that he wishes to fight in the organization’s 300th pay-per-view with the right opponent.

The Louisiana native pinpointed different scenarios involving the lightweight division’s top athletes before Olivi threw in the idea of McGregor. ‘I probably would try to shut him up once and for all,’ Poirier said of McGregor. ‘But even if I slap his a** around again, he’s still gonna be chatting so we’ll see.’

Poirier and McGregor’s rivalry began as up-and-comers in 2014. Although McGregor scored a first round knockout in their first meeting, Poirier put the trilogy to bed with back-to-back finishes over McGregor in 2021. ‘That’s a huge fight,’ Poirier said. ‘[I’m] 2-1 against him, I don’t really see another reason for it… but it’d be a huge fight.’

McGregor has not fought since breaking his tibia in his last loss to Poirier. Since recovering, McGregor’s return has repeatedly been teased with No. 5 ranked lightweight Michael Chandler as his rumored opponent. The two starred as opposing coaches in a season of The Ultimate Fighter reality show, but the fight is yet to be cemented. ‘Is he and Chandler official?’ Poirier asked. ‘What’s going on?’

On the other hand, Poirier has fought three times since the trilogy with McGregor. After beating the Irishman twice, Poirier closed 2021 by challenging former champion Charles Oliveira for the title in a losing effort. He bounced back by submitting Chandler in November 2022 before losing his rematch with Justin Gaethje for the BMF belt in July.

Poirier is currently the No. 3 ranked lightweight while McGregor’s inactivity has taken him off the rankings. ‘I missed [UFC] 200, I’m not gonna be around for 400, so that (UFC 300) would be very cool for me,’ Poirier reiterated. ‘Just have to see the landscape at that time. What’s gonna happen, I don’t know. ‘I think I’m gonna fight beginning of next year, the opponent is what we’re looking for.’ UFC 300 is expected to take place in April in Las Vegas, Nevada. A single fight is yet to be announced for the card
