Anne Hathaway was one of the primary characters in 2012’s Les Miserables, where she portrayed the role of Fantine, a prostitute who died of tuberculosis in the 1800s. Hathaway pushed herself to the very limit in order to ensure that she would be prepared for the role
While speaking on The Jess Cagle Interview (via People), Anne Hathaway talked about the struggles she had to face in order to prepare for her role. Hathaway revealed that she had to lose an ungodly amount of weight in two weeks for the role, which took its toll on her body.
“I’d lost an unhealthy amount of weight in two weeks. I didn’t know anything about nutrition. I taxed my body, and my brain bore the brunt of it for a while. I just felt very anxious and very lost at that time.”

Anne Hathaway Regrets Her Role In The Witches And Even Apologized For It
Anne Hathaway faced criticism for her portrayal of the Grand High Witch in the 2020 fantasy comedy The Witches directed by Robert Zemeckis. While she embraced the role with a vampy approach, the character’s physical appearance drew backlash for seemingly mocking individuals with limb differences.
Following the backlash, the Oscar-winning actress took to social media and addressed her role, issuing a public apology. Expressing her commitment to inclusivity and her strong hatred towards cruelty, Hathaway acknowledged the pain caused by her portrayal of the character. [Via Variety]
“As someone who really believes in inclusivity and really, really detests cruelty, I owe you all an apology for the pain caused. I am sorry. I did not connect limb difference with the GHW when the look of the character was brought to me; if I had, I assure you this never would have happened. I particularly want to say I’m sorry to kids with limb differences. Now that I know better, I promise I’ll do better. And I owe a special apology to everyone who loves you as fiercely as I love my own kids: I’m sorry I let your family down.”
The backlash was warranted as the film ultimately received a poor 49% on Rotten Tomatoes, as it was critically panned in a brutal fashion. Regardless, Anne Hathaway has moved on from such a role and it is certain she will never do such a thing ever again
