The Burmese python is one of the largest pythons in the world, but with a weight of more than 70 kg and a length of more than 5.2 m, the python found in Florida is also considered giant.

Scientists found a female Burmese python in the Florida Everglades area that was nearly 6 meters long, weighed more than 70kg and carried 73 developing eggs.

While pythons of all sizes have been found in the Everglades, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission most are between six and a half feet long. The largest one is more than 5.4m long and weighs more than 50kg.

According to a statement on, the animal is the largest python ever removed from Big Cypress National Preserve, a 729,000-acre tract west of Miami in South Florida.

When scientists find pythons here, they will attach location devices to their bodies, allowing them to know the location of females giving birth, in order to collect data and control individuals developing in the conservation area.

Burmese pythons are native to Southeast Asia, but in recent decades the large snakes have become a menace in Florida. The Everglades is a vast area with a perfect tropical climate for pythons to hide and thrive.
