It should surprise no one that the minute Lizzo hit the red carpet at the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards in Newark, New Jersey, the crowd—and the internet—went nuts.
The rapper/singer/flutist/Hustlers costar was one of the first stars to arrive at the show, and she was wearing a custom sequined gown by Moschino.
The red strapless Jeremy Scott–designed look was adorned with the word Siren in silver lettering throughout—and Lizzo definitely looked the part.
Lizzo paired the stunning dress with a red and metallic feather boa that she worked to excellent dramatic effect. Her hair was done in a bouffant, like a modern twist on Diana Ross and the Supremes.
You could hear the crowd of fans lining the red carpet screaming upon Lizzo’s arrival, and almost immediately social media lit up with praise for the look. MTV went with Lizzo’s own lyrics: “The DNA tests confirmed: @lizzo is 1000000% THAT BITCH! 🔥”
“Give Lizzo everything she wants. Give her the world,” one Twitter user wrote. “A #VMAs queen.” Another wants her in a Chicago remake.
“I’m obsessed with @lizzo,” former MTV VJ and One Tree Hill star Hilarie Burton tweeted.
“I’m not bad I was just drawn this way 💃🏾,” Lizzo herself wrote on Twitter referencing the famous quote by Jessica Rabbit in Who Framed Roger Rabbit—perhaps her inspiration for the vibe.
But mostly fans felt that Lizzo was giving them everything they wanted from her first big VMAs moments. “The only way I’d expect @lizzo to show up to the #VMAs,” one wrote. “She is AMAZING and the self confidence I feel when listening to her music….that’s what it’s all about!” another tweeted.
Lizzo was set to perform later in the show and was nominated for Best New Artist and Push Artist of the Year.
